Melancholia opens with a tart green apple and black currant that snap like a twig underfoot, the violet leaf adding a metallic, almost bruised edge. Mark Buxton’s composition is an exercise in restraint, a woody floral musk that refuses to bloom fully. The heart of narcissus and lily of the valley is botanical but muted, wrapped in a clean musk and a whisper of date sweetness that never turns syrupy. As it settles, juniper and incense drift in, but the vetiver and clearwood keep things dry and slightly smoky, like the last ember of a fire that nobody bothered to stoke.
The overall character is a watercolor painting left out in the rain: softened, blurred, gone before you can make out the details. It feels fresh and aromatic at first, then slowly becomes ozonic and aquatic, but always stays synthetic in that deliberate, niche way. The numbers tell the truth here. Longevity barely scrapes a three, and sillage is a shy two, so this is a skin scent that whispers, then fades. It suits the introspective type who wears fragrance for themselves, not for applause.
