Our take

John Varvatos XX opens with a crisp bite of red apple and black currant, the fruit juiced with cardamom’s aromatic warmth. It feels like a man who just stepped out of a fall orchard, his jacket still carrying the morning chill. The heart softens into white violet and orange blossom, a powdery, almost cosmetic sweetness that might surprise anyone expecting a rugged leather bomb. Geranium adds a green stiffness, keeping the florals from turning syrupy. Then the base settles: sandalwood and cedar give a creamy, woody anchor, while coffee adds a roasted, slightly bitter edge that grounds the whole composition.

This is an Oriental woody with a sweeter, more polished temperament than Varvatos’s usual rock-and-roll leathers. It wears close to the skin, sillage hovering around a modest 2.59, and longevity clocks in at just over three hours before fading into a skin-scented memory. That makes it a personal pleasure rather than a room-filling statement. It feels natural enough in its fruit and wood but leans mainstream with that clean, designer smoothness. The overall image is a worn cashmere sweater with coffee stains on the cuff: comfortable, refined, a little lived-in.

This fragrance suits the guy who wants to smell interesting without shouting. Skip it if you crave projection or all-day endurance. Wear it for a crisp autumn evening dinner or a winter coffee date, best after sunset when its powdery florals and soft woods can whisper instead of compete. A pleasant surprise, but one that evaporates too soon.
