Lime Basil & Mandarin smells exactly like its name promises at first: crushed lime and mandarin over bergamot, sharp and a little sour. Jo Malone put this together in 1999, and the basil and thyme that follow push it toward something green, herbal and slightly savory, with iris adding a soft, powdery lift underneath and lilac keeping a floral thread present without turning the whole thing sweet.
Vetiver and patchouli show up late and quietly, giving the drydown a dry, woody finish that never gets particularly heavy or dark. The citrus and herbs thin at an average pace, the woody base stepping in early and staying in charge from there, and the scent stays close to the skin almost from the start, felt by the wearer more than anyone standing nearby. It comes across as a mood more than a statement, meant to be caught in passing rather than announced on arrival.
It's built almost entirely for warm-weather daytime wear, best treated as a spring and summer habit, easy to layer over sunscreen or a light cotton shirt without either fighting the other. Crush a fistful of basil straight into a bowl of fresh limes and the smell holds there, green and citrus mixing before either one settles.
