This is a gardenia that wears a leather jacket and knows it. The opening is a puff of creamy white flowers, almost lactonic, like a petal crushed between your fingers, but the gardenia in the heart is no shrinking violet. It blooms with a waxy, indolic heft, and then the oud slinks in. This isn’t the barnyard stuff, it’s a polished, almost powdery agarwood that teams up with amber and white musk to create a base that feels like a velvet cushion stuffed with dark honey and dust. The overall character is a bride in a cigar lounge, elegant but with a smudge of ash on her wrist. It’s moderately heavy but wears close to the skin, and that is the honest weakness here: for an “Absolu,” the longevity is a frustrating three hours before it becomes a skin scent, and the sillage is a polite whisper. You will need to overspray or reapply. It feels more like a Jo Malone cologne with a dark mood than a proper extrait, which will disappoint those expecting a beast. This suits someone who wants a challenging floral, a gardenia with an animalic tick, and wants to wear it for cool evenings and deep winter nights when the powder can curl up with a scarf. Skip it if you prefer your white flowers clean or your oud loud. But for a brisk autumn dinner, it is a curious, lovely tension.
