Our take

Miroir des Voluptés opens with a surprisingly delicate smack of Bulgarian rose and African orange flower, a floral ambush that feels almost too polite for what’s lurking underneath. That civility curdles quickly as the heart drags in a rough-hewn oud and tobacco, not the polished kind you’d find in a mainstream designer, but something darker, drier, with a whisper of ash. By the time it settles into base notes, the patchouli and tonka have turned the whole affair into a powdered amber cocoon, thick with sandalwood and musk. The result is a fragrance that behaves like a velvet-lined cabinet in an abandoned theatre: ornate, slightly dusty, and full of secrets you’re not sure you want to find.

This is definitely a heavy, sweetish oriental that leans synthetic in the best possible way, all sculpted edges and no natural clumsiness. Longevity is excellent at over four hours, though sillage stays close to the chest, which is probably wise given the density. It wears like a fur stole in an overheated room, beautiful but demanding. Perfect for winter nights, especially when you want to feel both enveloped and slightly dangerous. I’d skip it in summer or if you prefer transparent, airy scents. It suits someone who enjoys the drama of vintage-inspired orientals but needs a little modern puffery to make them wearable. The only real weakness is that the opening can feel jarringly bright against the gloom of the rest.
