Antaeus
Fragrance notes
Character
Coriander and clary sage open Antaeus with a bitter, herbal snap, joined quickly by citrus that never really softens the sharpness underneath. Rose and thyme move in for the heart, an odd but effective pairing of floral and herbal that keeps the composition leaning dry.
Basil adds a green sharpness to that heart, and the base is where this fragrance earns its reputation: castoreum and oakmoss build something leathery and deeply earthy, with patchouli and French labdanum adding a resinous, smoky depth that lingers longest of anything in the structure. Lime and Amalfi lemon at the very top are easy to overlook once the citrus fades, but they give the opening minutes a sharper, more citrus-forward edge than coriander and clary sage alone would manage.
It suits low-lit evenings, a leather jacket, somewhere with a bit of edge more than a bright office. Longevity carries on for a genuinely long stretch here, unbothered about fading early.
The trail it leaves is noticeable, catching attention a moment before you actually speak. This will read as aggressive to anyone used to modern, clean woody scents, but someone who wants a proper chypre with real teeth will find the castoreum and leather combination delivers something few current releases even attempt anymore.
