Our take

Is this the scent you reach for when a clean, polite fragrance will not do? Onthamara is a dense, resinous study built around Thailand oud, pine tar, and black spruce. Frankincense and benzoin add a churchy weight, while castoreum, hyrax, and beeswax push the blend into a thick animalic register. Celery seeds, lovage root, and artemisia keep the edges sharp and green rather than sweet. Black currant and violet leaf offer a fleeting coolness against the heat of cinnamon, cumin, and amber. Labdanum and oakmoss ground the mix with earthy depth, and choya ral brings a smoky, tarry accent that lingers in the background.

As the heavier notes settle, the drydown reveals a fascinating, lived-in texture. The beeswax and benzoin soften the sharper bite of camphor and balsam fir, allowing the nard and orris to show a powdery, root-like elegance. Vetiver and palisander rosewood add a dry, carved-wood facet that sits beside the lingering oud. The animalic heart never fully fades, but it becomes smoother, merging with amber and black tea to create a warm, slightly dirty blanket of scent. Lavender and amyris provide a subtle, clean lift that keeps the resin from feeling completely suffocating.

This is a fragrance for damp evenings when the air is cold enough to see your breath. Imagine standing near a wooden cabin where pine sap has dripped onto a wool coat, while someone nearby burns frankincense and spills dark tea on the floor. It fits a mood of solitude and rugged introspection, suited to someone who enjoys scents that feel raw and unapologetically bold. Those who prefer fresh citrus or light florals will find this composition far too heavy and challenging for their taste.

The image is a weathered hunter's lodge at twilight, filled with smoke, damp earth, and the rich scent of cured leather mixed with warm resin.
