Tendre est la Nuit
Fragrance notes
Character
The opening is a strange, almost edible blur of immortelle’s syrupy hay and cabreuva’s balsamic whisper, with carrot seeds adding a parsnip-like rootiness that keeps it from tipping into dessert. Ambrette gives a fuzzy, clean musk, but it’s quickly smothered by a dual-pepper sting and artemisia’s bitter, wormwood tang. The heart turns medicinal and peppery, like a hot tincture poured over benzoin’s vanilla resin. Then the base descends: a dark, dusty chapel of incense, labdanum’s ambered leather, castoreum’s animal hide, and oakmoss that drags it all into a damp forest floor. The overall image is a velvet-lined cigar box left open in an attic full of dried herbs — luxurious, dusty, and slightly melancholic.
This is not a crowd-pleaser. It’s dense, contemplative, and leans heavily into its smoldering, leathery-amber core. The longevity is solid but not monstrous — expect a solid six hours before it retreats to skin-scent — and the sillage stays close after the first hour, which feels appropriate for its introspective character. It’s undeniably niche in construction, rich and natural-smelling, but the immortelle and pepper can turn screechy if oversprayed. Who should wear it? The person who wants to smell like a secret — not romantic, but remembered. Skip it if you prefer bright citruses or clean aquatics. Best worn on a cold November evening, solo, with a glass of something bitter. A fragrance for the hour before sleep, not the party.
