Our take

Roses de Chloé opens on litchi and black currant more than on rose itself, a fruit-basket freshness that runs across bergamot, tarragon and lemon before the flower even shows up. Tarragon is the surprise here, a faint anise-green herb note cutting through what could otherwise be a straightforwardly sweet citrus start, giving the whole opening a slightly savory edge.

Damask rose arrives properly in the heart, joined by magnolia, apple and peach, and cedar gives it just enough structure to keep from turning into a fruit salad. White musk, amber and woody notes settle underneath, powdery and soft rather than resinous or dark, closing the fragrance on a quiet, clean note.

Longevity is moderate, holding at a steady, unhurried middle course, present through a comfortable stretch of wear. Sillage stays modest, a small bloom that suits close company more than a crowded room. Spring is where it belongs, with summer close behind, worn in daylight when the fruit notes catch the light best. It is a rose for people who find classic rose soaps too heavy and eau de colognes too thin, landing somewhere soft and comfortable in between.
