Our take

Burlington 1819 opens like a slap of cold citrus and mint, sharp and bracing enough to wake a London fog. The grapefruit and lime are not sweet; they bite. Bitter orange and mandarin add a brief, zesty brightness that quickly pulls back as the heart emerges. This is where the fragrance finds its stride: a dense, aromatic tangle of tobacco, oakmoss, and rum, spiked with ginger and cumin. The ambergris is present but never overblown, anchoring the whole affair in a salty, slightly animalic warmth. Cashmere wood and patchouli keep it grounded, while the vanilla and benzoin only whisper sweetness from the wings.

The overall character resembles a weathered leather armchair in a gentlemen’s club at noon, sunlight catching the dust motes above a half-empty glass of spiced rum. It feels natural, not synthetic, and leans decisively niche despite its mainstream rating. The longevity of around six to seven hours is respectable, but the sillage is close, almost intimate. You will not announce your arrival from across the room, and that might be the point.

This is a spring and summer scent by the numbers, but I would wear it on a crisp autumn evening instead, when the green oakmoss and tobacco can really breathe. It suits the man who prefers a quiet nod to a loud handshake, someone who values craft over volume. Skip it if you want a projection monster or a fresh aquatic; this is a wool blazer, not a linen shirt.
