Our take

Parfum De La Nuit No 2 opens with a bright, almost misleading citrus flash: orange and bergamot spiked with lemon, the kind of zesty greeting that makes you think you’re in for a clean, airy ride. That illusion shatters fast. A slug of rum slides in, warm and slightly syrupy, and the whole composition sinks into a dense, ambered darkness. The base is a thicket of balsams, benzoin, tonka, and cocoa, but it’s the animalic notes — civet and castoreum, unapologetically musky and leathery — that give this fragrance its unsettled, carnal heart. Guaiac wood and papyrus add a smoky dryness, while vetiver and patchouli keep the sweetness from cloying. The overall character is like a sealed letter from a Victorian seducer: opulent, intimate, just a little disreputable.

This feels heavy and synthetic in the best niche sense, a constructed velvet gloom rather than any natural landscape. The longevity is solid at four out of five, lasting a full evening, but the sillage sits closer to the skin — a moderate 3.43, which is actually a strength here. You don’t want this announcing itself across a room; you want it to pull people in, to make them lean closer. It suits anyone who enjoys a sweet, boozy, animalic oriental and doesn’t mind smelling like a shadowy ritual. Skip it if you prefer fresh, clean, or airy scents — this one has zero interest in being polite. Wear it in deep winter or a crisp autumn night, for occasions where you want to feel wrapped in something dark and deliberate. Could it use a sharper projection? Maybe, but that would ruin the whisper.
