Cuir Noir from Les Soeurs de Noe opens with a sharp bite of pink pepper that quickly gives way to a dark, sticky plum. The fruit here is heavy and syrupy, sitting close to the skin rather than bursting outward. Jérôme Epinette and Pierre Wulff composed a scent where the floral aspect of jasmine is present but muted, acting as a bridge between the spice and the deeper materials. It feels appropriate for a night out in the city when the air is cool and the streets are quiet. The initial impression is one of density, moving away from freshness immediately.
The core of the fragrance relies on a heavy dose of black leather paired with smoky incense. This is not a bright or airy leather; it carries a resinous weight that feels quite somber. Vanilla adds a creamy softness to the base, preventing the leather from becoming too dry or medicinal. Cedar provides a sturdy, dry foundation that keeps the sweeter elements from dominating the entire composition. It is a blend that prioritizes depth over sparkle.
There is a balsamic quality that wraps around the wearer, creating a warm, amber-like halo. The elemi note offers a slight resinous lift in the very beginning, but the overall trajectory stays grounded in woody and aromatic territory. While the combination of plum and leather is executed well, the vanilla eventually becomes a bit too prominent for a fragrance marketed as a dark leather study.
