Our take

You’re not getting a leather jacket here, more like a well-worn leather satchel left out in a spring drizzle. Homme by Yohji Yamamoto opens with a crisp snap of bergamot and lemon, but the real surprise is the orris root, dusty and slightly cosmetic, that softens the citrus into something almost melancholic. The heart settles into a strange, lovely tension: a whisper of leather, a breath of violet leaf, and sage that smells more like dried herb than fresh garden. It’s not loud, nor is it trying to be. The base of sandalwood, cedar, and patchouli stays close to the skin, a quiet woody hum that leans powdery and a little ozonic, like the last trace of a storm passing over wet pavement.

The overall character is a morning in late spring, the air still cool and damp, when the sun hasn’t yet burned off the earthiness. It feels refined but not precious, natural without being aggressively green, and definitely niche in its refusal to project or perform. That’s the weakness: longevity barely cracks three hours, and sillage is a private whisper. You’ll need to reapply, or accept it as a fragrance for your own enjoyment rather than a crowd-pleaser.

This suits a thoughtful dresser, someone who favors charcoal linen and quiet confidence. Skip it if you want to fill a room or smell like a bonfire. Wear it to a gallery opening on a cool spring evening, or for a slow Sunday morning with a book. Is there anything more comfortable than a scent that asks nothing of you?
