Sicilian mandarin opens Aqva Amara with a bright, slightly bitter citrus snap, before watery notes and neroli push it into cool, aquatic territory through the heart. It carries with real persistence, holding its structure well once the citrus fades, and the sillage settles into a comfortable medium, easy to catch if you're standing nearby. Olibanum shows up late and unexpectedly, giving the drydown a resinous, incense-like depth, an odd but welcome turn after such a bright, watery opening.
Patchouli anchors the base with an earthy bitterness that plays well against the aquatic freshness above it, giving the composition some welcome grit. The bitter, resinous drydown does more work than anything before it, a surprising turn after such a straightforward citrus-aquatic opening. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud is credited as the perfumer, and that late shift from clean water notes to something almost bitter is the whole reason to pay attention here.
This works well in hot weather, sporty and easy without being throwaway, and the bitter, olibanum-heavy base gives it enough depth to work for evening occasions too. The name suggests something bitter and aquatic in equal measure, and that's exactly what it delivers, without much detour along the way.
