Rum and tobacco give Man In Black its first impression, dark and a little sweet, with spices adding warmth rather than sharpness. Leather and iris move in next, and tuberose brings an unexpected floral lift against all that darkness, with an animalic thread underneath giving the leather some grit. It belongs to winter evenings, better suited to dinner and dim rooms than daylight.
The iris is the real surprise in the middle of the composition, cool and slightly powdery where most fragrances built on rum and tobacco would just keep piling on warmth. It gives the whole thing a bit of lift and stops it sinking entirely into darkness, and that contrast is most of what makes it interesting to wear more than once.
Tonka bean, guaiac wood and benzoin thicken the base into something warm and a little sweet, in keeping with the vanilla and amber already there. Longevity is middling, present for the evening without much more than that, and the sillage holds a close-range presence, meant for whoever is near. A cigar box left half open in a dim study is about the closest comparison for what lingers once the tobacco and leather settle in together.
