Our take

Cafe Fondant is a dessert fragrance for people who usually avoid them. The argument rests on the rum and dates. Rum brings a boozy weight that keeps the opening from behaving like a sugar rush, and dates add a dense, dried fruit sweetness that feels earthy rather than candied. Dark chocolate sits underneath, but it is the rum that does the work. Lemon zest appears early and then disappears, which is exactly what it should do here. The citrus brightens the entrance without trying to sell the scent as fresh. Coffee and rose sit in the heart, yet neither takes charge. The coffee smells like grounds left in a warm room, and the rose is a faint floral haze that refuses to turn powdery. Amber rounds out the middle with a resinous heat that pushes the whole composition toward the gourmand side of oriental vanilla without crossing into something that belongs on a bakery shelf.

Oud and musk anchor the base, and that is where the position holds. The oud is polished and smooth, not medicinal, which lets the vanilla settle in without becoming a cupcake accord. Musk keeps the drydown close and personal rather than expansive. This is a cold weather scent built for evenings when you want to smell like a treat but not like a child's birthday. It suits someone who enjoys gourmands but dislikes the cloying ones that lean fully into caramel and sugar. The woody accord gives it enough structure to wear in a formal setting, though the sweetness will always be the first thing anyone notices about you
