Our take

Cuirelle opens with a sticky, fragrant slap of beeswax and cinnamon, the sweetness immediately cut by a sharp, smoky olibanum that feels less like church incense and more like the embers of a bonfire doused in honey. It develops quickly into a thick, earthy core of Indonesian patchouli and Bourbon vetiver, with the cedar lending a dry, almost splintery structure. The leather here is not a note but a sensation, a ghost conjured from the interplay of waxy balsams and smoky resins. The overall character is that of an antique wooden trunk lined with stained leather, its contents a jumble of dried herbs and beeswax candles from a century past. It is undeniably heavy and warm, leaning natural in its complexity but with a slightly synthetic edge in the cinnamon that keeps it from being a true botanical oddity.

This is niche perfumery at its most contemplative, a fragrance that demands you sit with it rather than blast through a room. And that is its weakness, because the longevity and sillage are modest at best. You get an hour of that gorgeous balsamic density before it retreats to a soft skin scent, lingering like a memory of honey and smoke. It is a beautiful but fleeting companion.

Who should wear it? Someone who prefers the whisper of an antique shop over the shout of a nightclub. It suits cool autumn afternoons, a wool coat, a quiet library, or a solitary walk through fallen leaves. Skip it if you crave projection or all-day endurance, or if sweet-smoky ambers make you feel claustrophobic. For the rest of us, it is a ten-minute reverie, perfectly dosed.
