Our take

Essential all but disappears once evening comes. Laurent Bruyere built it around bergamot, cassia and tomato leaf, a green, slightly savory citrus opening that owes more to a kitchen garden than to a bouquet, and tangerine adds a sweeter citrus note alongside the green tomato leaf. Rose and pepper move into the heart, the rose kept dry and slightly spiced rather than sweet, more a herb-garden rose than a bouquet rose, and the pepper adds a faint warmth that never turns assertive.

Sandalwood and patchouli close things out, giving the base a soft, woody warmth that never gets loud, dry and understated in how it settles, closer to a bar of unscented soap than to a cologne with any real ambition. Sillage barely leaves the skin, the sort of presence you would only notice on your own collar during a quiet moment. Staying power matches that modesty: fair, unremarkable, nothing that turns heads for its endurance. It suits daytime wear almost exclusively, office desks and spring mornings, built for someone who wants a fragrance that stays quiet and never asks to be the center of attention.
