Our take

The tent is lit by a single row of bulbs that sway in the cold air. Sawdust covers the ground in a thick layer, and the air smells of inflated rubber from the tightrope walker's gear. Haunted Circus opens with that exact scent, a cool and elastic snap that feels like walking into a big top after the crowd has gone home. It is a strange and mechanical start that prepares the senses for something unusual.

Warmth arrives as a vendor's tray moves past. The heart carries popcorn coated in melted butter, a heavy lactonic scent that mixes with coarse salt and sticky caramel. It smells like a paper cone held close to the chest while standing in a dark aisle. The sweetness is real, but the salt keeps it grounded in the reality of the fairground rather than a candy shop.

Beneath the food stalls, the floor is made of old planks and damp earth. Ebony wood and vetiver provide a dry, earthy foundation that supports the gourmand notes above. Green leaves add a cool touch that mimics the night air flowing through the canvas walls. Patchouli and vanilla blend into the wood, creating a powdery and deep atmosphere that feels rooted in the ground.

The scent settles into the shadows as the performers prepare. You stand near the center pole, smelling the combination of butter, salt, and dark timber while the ozonic air hints at the open sky far above the roof.
