Our take

R'Oud is a thick, resinous blend that wraps vanilla and oud around a leather core. The musk adds a soft, slightly animalic breath that keeps the composition from feeling completely polished. Powdery and sweet accords sit beside the smoky edge, giving the scent a vintage character that feels more like an old dressing table than a modern niche release. The fruity and floral touches are present but they stay buried under the heavier materials.

The Yorkshire Soap Co. launched this in 2019 as a unisex take on a style that usually leans masculine. It smells handmade in the best sense, with a slightly rough edges that some will love and others will find clumsy. The vanilla here is not a dessert note. It acts as a warm blanket over the sharper leather and the dark wood, creating a scent that feels cozy and slightly dusty at the same time.

This is not a subtle introduction to oud. The leather and the animalic accord are loud enough that the floral and fruity facets barely get a word in. The roughness that gives it charm also means the blend lacks refinement, and the smoky sweetness can feel a bit muddy when the air is warm. It is a fragrance with a clear personality, but the execution is uneven and the materials sometimes clash rather than complement each other.
