The sun sits high over a shaded courtyard where a man leans against a white wall. He peels a fresh orange and the bright spray hits the air at the same moment a glass of cold grapefruit juice condenses against his hand. The citrus is immediate and loud, cutting through the warm air with a sharp, clean edge.
A few steps away, the scent does not travel. It sits close, woven into the fabric of his shirt and the heat of his skin. As the fruit brightens the space around him, a pinch of pepper lands in the middle of the air, dry and faintly hot. It nudges the citrus aside just enough to make room for the woods that follow. Vetiver pushes up through the ground notes with a damp, earthy smell, while cedar offers a dry, pale plank of scent. Patchouli adds a sweet, dark soil smell that grounds the whole picture without pulling it into the shadows.
The orange and grapefruit stay visible through the woods, never quite fading into the background while the pepper keeps the air moving. The whole scene holds together in a narrow band around him, present and steady while the day continues and the light shifts across the stone.
