Daphne opens with a bitter orange peel twisted over a smoking altar of incense and saffron, but the true shock is how quickly tuberose wrestles control, a white floral bruise softened by buttery iris and a vanilla that refuses to be gourmand. Antoine Lie builds something that feels ancient yet chemically precise, like a relic unearthed from a cyberpunk temple. The patchouli and oud are present but tamed, wrapped in balsamic amber so that the whole thing wears like a heated, resinous ghost rather than a perfume with sillage at 3.77. Longevity at 4.17 is generous, a good six hours before it dissolves into a skin-sweet whisper of jasmine and rose, still smoky, still strange.
This is not a flirty spring spritz. It is a clove of black garlic tucked into a silk-lined coat pocket, sharp and warm and faintly unsettling. The votes say it works across every season, and they are right, because the incense anchors heat while the amber blooms in cold air. But the white floral center means it demands confidence. Skip it if you want clean linen or sugary fruit. Wear it to a winter gallery opening or a late summer night when you cannot sleep and want to smell like the reason you cannot.
Is there any other Comme des Garçons that walks this line between liturgical and carnal with such offhanded grace? Probably not. Daphne is a heavy, finely synthetic oddity that belongs to the person who knows their own presence is enough and does not need the scent to shout.
