Smoke is the whole point here, and Series 3 Incense: Avignon delivers it almost immediately: chamomile and elemi add a slightly bitter, resinous brightness, and aldehydes give the opening a cold, sharp lift. Nothing about the opening smells edible or floral, which suits an incense built this dry.
French labdanum, spices and ambrette move in for the heart, warm and a little musky, softening the smoke without ever fully clearing it away. The musk mallow scent of ambrette is subtle, more texture than note, filling in the gaps between the spices and the resin.
The base is enormous on paper, incense, myrrh, olibanum, Virginia cedar, Brazilian rosewood, patchouli, oak moss, vanilla and musk, but it never smells cluttered, coming across as one thick, unified cloud of smoke and resin instead of ten separate ingredients competing for space.
Wear time keeps an average pace, dependable without being anything special. The smoke it gives off stays contained, felt mostly by the wearer and anyone standing right beside them. Avignon leans hard into fall and winter, its smoky, balsamic character suited to layering under a heavy coat on a cold day.
