ERL Sunscreen
Fragrance notes
Character
ERL Sunscreen opens with a sharp burst of bergamot and solar notes that feel less like actual sunlight and more like the metallic click of a plastic spray bottle on a blistering afternoon. The aldehydes lend a fizzy, almost synthetic shimmer, quickly softened by a peach that is canned rather than fresh, syrupy and ripe. Heliotrope and lily of the valley dust the heart with a powdery, vaguely nostalgic sweetness, like the inside of a beach bag that has spent all summer baking in the back of a car. The dry down is where the promised coconut finally appears, but it is shy, barely lactonic, wrapped in a gentle musk and a cedar so quiet it might be a whisper. This is a Polaroid of a beach vacation that someone accidentally left in a hot glovebox, the edges curling and the colours bleeding.
With a longevity hovering just under three hours and a sillage that barely reaches your own shoulders, this fragrance is an intimate ghost. It feels deliberately synthetic in the way that Comme des Garçons often excels at, capturing a memory rather than the thing itself. It is sweet, powdery, and slightly mineral, like dried salt on skin that has already been rinsed off. Who should wear it? Someone who wants a soft, wispy scent for a hazy spring afternoon or a breezy summer morning. Skip it if you demand projection, or if you want a sunscreen that actually smells like the one you slather on. It is a whisper when you might want a shout, but for fifteen minutes, it is a lovely one.
