Our take

Empreinte by Courrèges opens with a startling brightness: aldehydes and bergamot flash like morning light on wet asphalt, while artemisia and coriander twist the sweetness of peach into something herbal and sharp. It’s an old-fashioned slap in the face, proper and a little rude. Within minutes, the heart blooms with iris dust and jasmine’s creamy indoles, but just as you settle into the floral, a ghost of melon floats through, green and faintly synthetic, like a whisper from a 1970s kitchenette. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its keep: oakmoss and castoreum build a leathery, smoky cradle, with patchouli and sandalwood warming the cedar to a powdery amber glow. The overall character? A vintage powder compact left in a damp leather glove. It feels heavy, earthy, and unapologetically natural in its rawness, though the moderate longevity and soft sillage won’t announce your arrival from across the room. That’s its weakness: it stays close, a private scent rather than a broadcast. Perfect for cool autumn evenings, suited to someone who prefers the scent of a worn wool coat over a cashmere sweater. Skip it if you want sweetness or transparency. This is an ashtray full of dried rose petals, and it wears like a lifted eyebrow.
