From the first touch, the scent is bright and slightly sticky, like an apricot just bruised by a thumbnail, its juice catching on the edge of an orange blossom petal. It is not a clean, soapy citrus; it is humid and golden, smelling of mid-morning light pooling on a wooden floor. As she stands and steps into her dress, the air around her shifts. The humidity of the opening gives way to a heavy, creamy pollen cloud of jasmine sambac and gardenia. They do not smell dewy here. They smell thick, almost waxy, warmed by skin and beginning to press against the nose with a soft, animalic weight. A sliver of dry wood sits beneath the flowers, not sharp enough to cut the white petals, but present enough to keep the room from smelling like a hothouse. When she leans close to fasten a bracelet, the base begins to exhale. It is a plush, powdered blanket of musk and vanilla, blurring the line between skin and scent until the two are indistinguishable. The floral arrangement is strikingly beautiful, yet the synthetic edge of the vanilla begins to dominate. It lacks the airy lift promised by the opening, becoming a dense, cloying blanket that traps the wearer in a bubble of heavy, powdery sweetness.
