Rhinoceros Edition 2020 opens with a slug of whiskey so smoky you can almost feel the warm glass in your palm, a rum-soaked coffee grind that’s been dusted with pink pepper and a single torn basil leaf. It’s not a polite introduction; it’s a bar stool at last call, sticky and confident. The heart pulls a leather jacket over damp tobacco, then lets incense curl through it while a thread of ylang-ylang adds just enough sweetness to keep the whole thing from turning into a cudgel. That sweet grass note, somewhere between hay and a dry prairie, stops it from feeling like a costume. On the drydown, Laotian oud and cypriol build a dark, resinous floor, with patchouli and oakmoss adding an earthy, almost bitter weight. The overall character is a wool overcoat that’s been left in a rain-soaked cigar lounge, then hung to dry over a firepit.
The numbers back up the experience: longevity is strong at nearly 4 out of 5, and sillage is moderate, closer to 3.5. It projects for the first hour, then sits close, radiating warmth rather than shouting. It’s unquestionably niche — dense, boozy, leathery, and not trying to please anyone. The weaknesses are real: the sweetness from ylang and amber can feel cloying in warmer weather, and the whiskey-top is so assertive it might sour on skin that leans metallic. This is for the person who wants to smell like a well-worn library where someone’s been drinking single malt, not the one hunting for compliments. Skip it if you prefer fresh citrus or soft florals. Wear it only in autumn or winter, preferably for nights out when the air bites.
