Our take

A brass lamp burns low in a wood-paneled library, its globe casting a warm circle across a table of open books and a half-poured glass of aged spirits. The air holds a thick, resinous weight as Thailand oud rises first, dark and damp like cut timber after rain, twisted with the dry, herbal bite of angelica. Tobacco leaf curls through the opening, not sweet but raw, its scent mingling with the heavy smoke of birch tar that seems to drift from the stone hearth across the room. Galbanum adds a sharp green edge that cuts through the dense wood, while patchouli grounds the heart with an earthy, damp soil texture. Guaiac wood lends a dry, charcoal-like smoothness that keeps the greenery from feeling bright.

Vanilla and benzoin melt into the smoke, creating a golden, balsamic warmth that feels sticky against the cooler air of the room. Labdanum and leather deepen the base, their animalic musk pressing close to the skin like a well-worn coat, while tobacco returns in the drydown to echo the opening. The composition is undeniably rich, yet the vanilla occasionally leans too heavily into a sugary softness that threatens to flatten the rugged, tarry edges of the oud and leather. This sweetness feels slightly out of place against the stark, smoky woods, softening a profile that strives for a rugged, untamed character.
