Our take

There is a strangely hopeful tension in the opening of Avon’s Today Tomorrow Always Diamond, a floral green that starts with hyacinth’s wet, crushed-stem snap and the fizzy, almost candied insistence of African orange flower. Stephanotis floats in like a clean white sheet on a line, all purity and no fuss. The heart turns its attention to narcissus, which brings a slightly powdery, soil-scented melancholy, while orchid and arum lily push things into a cool, waxy greenness, like the inside of a florist’s fridge at dawn. The base is where the whole thing settles into a soft, velvety musk with a whisper of vetyver’s dry root and the faint rosewood warmth of palisander. It smells less like a diamond and more like a well-worn cashmere scarf you found in a secondhand shop — modest, comfortable, not quite your size, but you wear it anyway because it feels good. The longevity is a modest four or five hours, the sillage barely a handshake, which is fine for a spring morning at the office or a lunchtime errand. It has a synthetic sheen that never quite escapes its Avon roots, but there is genuine charm in that unpretentious green-floral sparkle. Skip it if you need a room-filler or a dramatic evening statement. Wear it when you want to smell clean without smelling like soap, and when the day ahead asks for nothing more than pleasant competence.
