Amber and myrrh sit at the center of Ambre Sultan from the very first moment, thick and resinous, with bay leaf and oregano cutting in as a strange, savory contrast right at the top. Bay leaf and oregano are an odd, savory pairing, giving the opening a strange, almost culinary quality before the resins take over. Coriander and angelica add a peppery, faintly spicy lift before the amber pulls everything back toward warmth. Staying power settles in for the long haul, and the sillage stays compact rather than spreading wide.
Patchouli, benzoin and sandalwood settle into a dense, balsamic base that never really brightens, keeping the whole composition dark from heart to finish. Myrtle keeps a faint herbal note alive even after the resins take over completely. Angelica's peppery lift from the top never fully disappears either, resurfacing faintly whenever the composition seems ready to settle into pure amber.
Fall and winter are its true seasons, worn once the weather turns cold enough to want something this heavy and warm. Myrrh and amber are what stay longest in the memory, a dense, resinous pair that gives the whole thing its brooding character.
