Our take

A sharp burst of bergamot, bright and almost tart, opens Nocturnal Life before the cinnamon and juniper berries rush in like a heated argument. The juniper lends a gin-like clarity, a prickly greenness that keeps the cinnamon from turning into a holiday candle, while incense smolders underneath, dry and resinous. The overall effect is a warm, smoky cloak with a slight medicinal bite, like stepping into a dimly lit bar where someone has just stubbed out a clove cigarette.

This is not a sweet, syrupy scent. It leans dry and aromatic, with a synthetic edge that reminds you it’s a Zara release, not a niche boutique find. The accords do their job: woody, balsamic, with a faint amber glow. But the longevity is a whisper at just over three hours, and the sillage barely registers past an arm’s length. You get a lovely, intimate cloud that fades before your evening really starts.

Who should wear it? Anyone who wants a brisk, grown-up spice without going full Christmas market. Skip it if you crave projection or all-day staying power. Best saved for a crisp autumn night, worn under a wool coat, when you want to smell interesting without shouting about it. A flickering candle in a cold room, lovely but short-lived.
