Our take

Mystical Metal opens with a tart raspberry and saffron that feels like a slick, chilled wine spritzer at a department store counter. The fruit is synthetic in a deliberate way, not cheap but polished, and the saffron gives it a warm, almost metallic shimmer. Almost instantly the hibiscus crashes in, a floral that is more jammy than dewy, like a crushed petal stain on a chrome surface. The drydown is all leather, but not the rich, cushioned kind. This is a stiff, vinyl-lined jacket that has been stored in a box with potpourri. It stays close to the skin, which is the biggest frustration, because the raspberry and smoke lingers for only a couple of hours before the leather becomes a wispy whisper. With longevity averaging just over three hours and sillage barely reaching two and a half, this is a fragrance that demands reapplication or a generous trigger finger. It reads more like a playful synthetic experiment from the indie fringe than a mainstream Zara offering, which is both its charm and its limitation. The overall character is a neon sign in a rainy alley still flickering, a vivid but fleeting image. This suits someone who wants a bold, fruity leather with a metallic edge for a crisp autumn date or a cool spring night out, but anyone who demands projection or all-day wear should skip it entirely. Can a fragrance be too intriguing for its own good?
