Our take

Bay Rum opens with a camphoraceous slap of bay laurel and clove, allspice and cinnamon twisting through it like a hot wire. The rum note is less about intoxication and more about dark molasses sweetness, a sticky resinous undertow that never quite lets the orange blossom or citruses break the surface. Within minutes the spices settle into a dusty accord, woody and dry, like the smell of an old mahogany bar where the bottles have been polished with bay oil.

The overall character feels like a worn leather armchair in a library at dusk, with a glass of spiced cider gone cold on the side table. It is natural and unapologetically niche, heavy rather than sweet, and leans confidently masculine although it sits comfortably on anyone who wants a barbershop with teeth. The longevity and sillage score only a modest three, which means it stays close after a few hours, a faint ghost of clove and resin on the skin. That rating of 3.54 tells the truth: this fragrance divides rooms. Some will find the camphor edge medicinal, others will adore its uncompromising spice.

Wear it in the deep cold of fall or winter, for evenings when you want to smell like a well stocked apothecary rather than a basket of fruit. Skip it if you prefer clean laundry scents or delicate florals. This is for the person who thinks a spiced rum candle is too polite.
