Our take

Zara’s Wood Noir opens with a brisk citrus snap from bergamot, cold and slightly metallic, before lavender and sage sweep in with an herbal, almost medicinal clarity. The dark woodsy base arrives quietly at first, then settles like the worn leather armchair in a dimly lit study, all polished grain and shadow. This is a fragrance that feels deliberately composed for the cooler months, winter and fall its true habitat, and the numbers back that up: near-perfect seasonal votes, but only middling longevity and sillage. It drifts close to the skin, a restrained companion rather than a room filler, which suits its character. Wood Noir is not trying to shout; it’s the aromatic equivalent of a tailored black turtleneck, sharp but unassuming, synthetic in the best sense, clean and linear without being cheap. It suits the man who wants a no-nonsense woody lavender for evening dinners or late walks, but if you crave projection or a complex evolution, look elsewhere. The dry down stays reliably woody, slightly spicy from the sage, but never sweet. A competent, handsome workhorse, just not one that leaves a long trail.
