Elegy

Opening as a shimmering, bittersweet morning in a neglected garden, Elegy by Jorum Studio hits with bergamot’s citrus bite and honeysuckle’s honeyed pollen, quickly tangled by heather’s dry herbal rasp and lavender’s medicinal clarity. The honeysuckle is the star here, but it’s not a sweet, lolling vine; it’s sharp, almost green, like crushed stems. As it develops, the heart blooms into a dense, powdery floral haze of jasmine and orange flower, but the bourbon geranium and rose keep things rooted in a dusty, slightly soapy geranium leaf roughness. Ambrette adds a fuzzy, skin-like warmth that bridges into the base. And what a base: a dark, resinous tangle of labdanum, benzoin, oakmoss, and a restrained oud that smolders rather than stinks. Hay and patchouli give a dried, barnyard warmth, while ambergris adds a salty animalic shimmer. The overall image is that of an antique botanical illustration left out in the rain, the ink bleeding into the paper, colors running together into a melancholic brown-green smudge. It feels natural and notably niche, with a vintage, almost gothic character, but the longevity is merely average at about four hours, and sillage sits very close to the skin; you are wearing this for yourself, not the room. It suits those who prefer brooding, complex florals over bright, modern ones, but anyone expecting a loud projection or a clean rose will feel shortchanged. Wear it on a cool, overcast spring afternoon or a rainy autumn evening, when the air already smells of wet stone and fallen leaves. Do not wear it to a wedding, unless you intend to mourn something.
