Our take

Source Saint-Clair opens with Calabrian bergamot and Timur pepper, a bright citrus that carries a sharp, tingling heat. Ylang-ylang and jasmine soften the entry with a creamy floral tone, while hedione adds a airy, transparent lift that keeps the opening from feeling heavy. Heliotrope introduces a powdery almond touch that bridges the top into the heart. Cloves bring a dry, aromatic sting that sits beside cedar essence and Indonesian patchouli leaf. The patchouli is earthy rather than muddy, and the precious woods give the center a grounded, resinous texture. Ambroxan and ambrette enter early enough to wrap the florals in a clean, musky haze, so the transition never feels like a sudden shift from fresh to dark.

The base gathers Siam benzoin, myrrh, opoponax, tonka bean, vanilla absolute, and musk into a thick, balsamic warmth that feels suited to a candlelit room when the air is cold. The vanilla and tonka provide a steady sweetness, but the resins and myrrh keep it dry and faintly medicinal rather than sugary. Musk and ambroxan hold the woods close to the skin in a soft, persistent glow. It is a fragrance built on contrast, where citrus and pepper lead into smoke and balsam, and the powdery florals never fully fade beneath the resinous weight. The clove and cedar linger through the drydown, tracing a spicy line through the amber and vanilla as the benzoin continues to release its warm, faintly vanillic scent
