Blue Jeans opens with a wide spread of citrus, bergamot, juniper, anise, Brazilian rosewood and basil, aromatic and a little peppery rather than simply fresh. Lavender, rose, carnation, jasmine, geranium, heliotrope, sage, fir and lily-of-the-valley crowd into the heart, an old-school fougère density built with real ambition. Vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood, iris, musk, cedar, amber, patchouli and vetiver settle into a base that is warm, powdery and surprisingly complex for a bottle this affordable. The anise and basil in the opening add a faint licorice sharpness, a nice surprise this early in the composition, and the sheer number of notes crowded into the heart gives it a busy, layered feel rarely attempted at this price.
Longevity keeps a steady, unhurried pace that matches the classic structure, and the sillage stays modest in throw, easy to live with in close quarters. The lavender and vanilla combination in particular gives it a warmth that outperforms what the name and bottle suggest, and the fir note adds a faint, cool brightness to the base beneath all that powder.
