It feels substantial from the start, opening with a familiar, soothing lavender that immediately meets the grit of geranium and the sharp brightness of orange. It is a classic aromatic combination, but the addition of ginger and cloves in the heart adds a fiery, medicinal heat that keeps the blend from ever feeling like a standard soap or a generic barbershop splash. It is a scent that demands a certain level of dressing up, or at least a certain level of intention.
The transition into the base is where the fragrance justifies its name, moving from that sharp, herbal opening into a heavy, resinous cloud of patchouli and oud. The amber and vanilla are present, but they do not turn this into a gourmand; they act more like a golden filter over the darker, rougher wood. It smells expensive and slightly old-fashioned, evoking the feeling of a leather-bound library or a heavy wool coat. However, the limitation here is its personality. The combination of heavy oud and medicinal artemisia creates a very specific, almost austere mood. It lacks a certain playful versatility.
