Our take

Russian Musk opens with a brisk slap of pine and fir, the citrus zing of lemon and mandarin barely cutting through the resinous green. This is a forest floor in early spring, still damp with snowmelt. The heart warms quickly with cinnamon and clove wrapping around a ghost of orange blossom, but the real story is in the base: a heavy, sticky tangle of natural musk, Cambodian oud, and oakmoss that feels almost feral. The overall image is an old wooden dacha, its walls soaked in decades of woodsmoke, animal hide, and bitter herbs.

It leans heavily natural and unapologetically niche with a distinctly skanky underbelly. Longevity is solid at nearly four hours, but the sillage clings close like a secret rather than a broadcast which suits its introspective character. This fragrance feels best in the chill of fall and winter, especially at night. It suits someone who prefers their perfumes dirty, contemplative, and unpolished. Skip it if you want easy freshness or crowd pleasing sweetness. The powdery tonka and sandalwood soften the edges just enough to keep it wearable, but the overall heaviness can feel oppressive in summer. Could a fragrance this raw ever be called graceful? Only if grace includes a muddy bootprint on a silk rug.
