Our take

There is a peculiar tension in L’eau d’Issey Eau de Parfum, a fragrance that opens like a cold splash of mineral water on a sunburned shoulder. The lotus and freesia are gauzy and translucent, but the calone hits hard, that sharp watermelon-rind aquatic that defined an era. A faint rose peeks through, barely there, like a petal trapped under ice. The heart shifts into a creamy lily and osmanthus, the latter lending a leathery apricot whisper that softens the synthetic edge. Then the base arrives: ambrette musking the skin, cedar and sandalwood providing a dry, slightly peppery anchor. This is the smell of a white hotel robe after a long bath, still damp at the cuffs.

It is undeniably synthetic in its radiant smoothness, yet that is hardly a flaw. The composition is polished enough to feel mainstream, but the osmanthus note gives it a quiet strangeness, a curl of personality. The performance, however, is a polite murmur rather than a declaration. Longevity barely brushes past lunch, and sillage stays close to the collar. It is a spring morning scent, best worn to a brunch where the mimosas are bottomless, not to a nightclub. Skip it if you want to leave a room trailing smoke and spice. This is for the person who prefers a clean wrist against their own cheek, a fragance that whispers “I just showered” even at five in the evening.
