Our take

Kenzo pour Homme carries the exact marine-aromatic signature that flooded men's fragrance in the early 1990s, and on a first try it can feel like a genre exercise rather than a fragrance with its own personality. Sea notes and bergamot open sharp and a little generic, the kind of freshness that was everywhere on drugstore shelves that decade.

Give it time and Christian Mathieu's structure earns back some of that goodwill. Pine, juniper and caraway push the heart into genuinely aromatic, almost herbal territory, and carnation with rose add a spicier, warmer edge to the freshness. The base settles into balsam fir, oakmoss and labdanum, a resinous, conifer-heavy foundation with real presence to it.

On skin it sticks around for a solid while, holding its shape through most of the wear, and projection stays modest, a quiet cloud that reaches only as far as whoever happens to be standing right beside you, warm but never loud. This is a fair pick for someone who wants a grown-up take on an aromatic classic without chasing something more modern, though anyone allergic to the marine-fresh genre entirely should skip straight past it.
