Gula by Memoize London opens with a sharp green bite from galbanum that cuts through the initial sweetness of sweet orange. The lavender that follows is dry and herbal rather than fresh, sitting closer to a cabinet of dried herbs than a barbershop shelf. There is a resinous weight here that feels deliberate, as though the fragrance is settling into a heavy wool coat rather than a light cotton shirt.
Red thyme and cloves bring a warm, penetrating spice that leans into the skin and stays there. The jasmine is present but muted, acting as a bridge for the vanilla to creep in without turning the blend into a sugar-heavy dessert. Sandalwood and vetiver ground the base, giving the vanilla a dry wood to rest against so the sweetness remains structured.
Black musk pulls the entire composition into a dim, amber-lit room where the air is thick with heat and the scent of crushed herbs on old floorboards.
