Our take

Where most spice-and-wood compositions reach for clove or pepper, Bouquet Ideale by Xerjoff builds its opening from cinnamon and nutmeg alone, warm and baking-spice adjacent without a single sharp edge to interrupt it. Jacques Flori keeps that spice narrow and precise rather than throwing in a whole spice rack, which gives the opening a focus a lot of similar woods skip past.

Guaiac wood, sandalwood, Virginia cedar and papyrus form the heart, dry and aromatic, shifting the fragrance from purely spiced to genuinely woody, papyrus in particular adding a paper-dry texture that is unusual in this category. Vanille, coumarin, tobacco blossom, French labdanum and musk round out the base, balsamic and sweet, and staying power is strong here, holding its shape for a long stretch once the base takes over. Sillage sits at a modest bubble, present for whoever's close by without pushing much further out.

Fall and winter are the obvious seasons for this, worn for its warmth as much as its spice. Cinnamon lovers who want the note handled with restraint, not turned into candy, are exactly who this bottle was built for.
