Tangerine opens XJ 1861 Renaissance with a juicy snap, joined almost immediately by mint, which turns the whole top accord cold rather than sugary. Bergamot and petitgrain widen that citrus base further, so the opening comes across as a full basket of fruit, not a single note. Lily-of-the-valley and rose drift in underneath, floral without being heavy, more like a garden after rain than a bouquet. Xerjoff built this with citrus at its center, and the fragrance never really leaves that register even as it develops.
Patchouli anchors the base, dry and slightly bitter, giving the composition real weight once the citrus fades. Cedar and amber bring warmth that stays light, and the overall effect remains bright even in its final stretch. The structure feels well balanced for something built almost entirely on citrus and mint.
Staying power is genuinely strong, holding its structure long after the top notes have faded into the woody base. Sillage settles into a modest cloud, favoring the wearer's own space over anyone standing nearby.
