Or Black
Fragrance notes
Character
Or Black opens with a sharp slap of black pepper and leather, the bergamot barely cutting through before the smoke sets in. This is not a polite introduction. Within minutes, the heart reveals a dusky French labdanum, sticky and resinous, paired with a sage that feels almost medicinal, while benzoin adds a faint, sweet warmth. As it dries down, the base turns into a classic fougere skeleton of oakmoss and vetyver, but the amber, tonka, and a strange, almost animalic musk pull it toward something darker, less groomed. The ylang-ylang peeks through like a forgotten silk lining inside a leather jacket.
The overall character is that of an old leather armchair left in a damp cellar: rich, slightly mossy, and carrying the ghost of cigar smoke and dried herbs. It feels heavy, natural in a rough, 80s way, definitely niche in spirit even if it was once a designer release. The longevity is moderate, around four hours, and the sillage sits close to the skin after the first hour, which is its main weakness. You will not fill a room, but those who lean in will smell something complex and brooding.
This fragrance suits a man who appreciates broody, vintage-leaning scents, someone who isn’t afraid of a little dust and earth. Skip it if you prefer fresh aquatics or sweet gourmands. Wear it in autumn or winter, for a rainy evening or a night at a dimly lit jazz club. It is not for the office or the gym. One must ask: do you want to smell like you just walked out of a 1981 Parisian leather shop, or do you want to blend in?
