Our take

You spray Love-O-Matic and it hits you like a sugar-soaked slap from a cheap soda fountain: bright strawberry and blackcurrant, sharpened by a lemon that cuts through any pretense of sophistication. The opening is aggressively synthetic, but that’s the point. It’s a toy, a mood, not a museum piece. Within minutes, the bubble gum accord swells up, laced with ozonic air that feels like the gust from a fairground ride spinning too fast. Jérôme di Marino has crafted a chypre fruity that plays dress-up as a gourmand, but the dry down reveals a powdery musk and a whisper of cedar, ambrette lending a clean, almost laundry-like softness. The whole thing is a cotton candy cloud you buy at a carnival, knowing it will dissolve before you reach the parking lot.

That’s the weakness: with a sillage rating near 2.4 and longevity barely over three hours, Love-O-Matic is a vapor trail, not a statement. You get a fleeting rush of sweet, tropical fizz, then it’s gone. It suits someone who wants a transient mood boost for a sunny morning, a quick serotonin hit before brunch. Skip it if you crave presence or depth; this is not a fragrance that fills a room or lingers into dinner. Spring and summer are its rightful homes, daylight only. Does a fragrance this ephemeral deserve its 4.22 average? Maybe, if you value the joy of a giddy, unapologetically artificial burst over any pretense of longevity.
