Our take

Jo Malone pairs oud with bright citrus here, agarwood's dark, slightly medicinal smoke set directly against bergamot, orange and Amalfi lemon. The citrus does most of the early work, sharp and a little bitter, before the oud starts to show through underneath as the brightness fades. Both the smoke and the citrus settle down at a fairly average pace, neither rushing off nor hanging around, and it keeps close to the body, more a private note than something meant for anyone else to catch.

Virginia cedar bridges the two halves, dry and woody, giving the citrus a little more backbone against the oud's weight. This is a gentle, well-behaved version of oud, more suggestion than statement, without the barnyard or leather edge that rougher ouds bring to a composition. The lemon in particular keeps resurfacing throughout the wear, a bright thread that never fully disappears into the wood.

Once the air turns cool and dry, this comes into its own, when the citrus reads crisp rather than sharp and the oud takes on a slightly warmer character, still delicate enough for daily wear. It works well as an introduction to oud for someone used to cleaner, more citrus-driven fragrances, easing them toward the smokier, woodier side of perfumery without much of a shock.
