Our take

Ambilux opens with a sharp, almost quarrelsome blast of cumin and pink pepper that feels less like a greeting and more like a challenge. The cumin is sweaty and borderline feral, but it softens quickly as incense smoke curls upward, carrying a strange, honeyed ylang-ylang that would be pretty if it weren’t for the animalic undertow. Within an hour, the dry down reveals itself as the real story: castoreum and costus, dirty and leathery, wrapped in immortelle’s syrupy haylike sweetness. The overall character is something like a weathered leather saddle that spent the night in a church filled with dried flowers and burnt resins. It’s heavy, natural in its raw materials but unmistakably niche, with a density that feels almost sticky on the skin.

The sillage is modest, hovering close like a secret you’re not sure you want to share, and longevity holds at a respectable three to four hours before sinking into a skin scent. That low projection is actually a mercy, because this fragrance is a lot. It suits someone who enjoys animalics and isn’t shy about wearing something that smells like a medieval apothecary after a rainstorm. Skip it if you prefer airy citruses or soapy clean scents. Wear it in deep autumn or winter, during the day only if you’re feeling confrontational, but ideally at night when the darkness can handle its weight. Who else would dare wear the scent of a dusty fur coat left in a temple?
