Black Oud

Character
The heavy door swings shut and the small courtyard goes quiet. A brazier glows near the far wall, its smoke curling upward past the cedar beams overhead. Someone has rubbed cumin and nutmeg into the meat turning slowly above the coals, and the dry heat of that spice sits close to the skin. Incense hangs in the cool air, wrapping the space in a pale gray veil that softens every edge.
Vanilla enters without softening the scene. It feels resinous here, thickened by labdanum that pulls the sweetness toward something earthy and still. The cedar in the heart holds the structure upright, keeping the air from collapsing into pure sugar. Amber begins to rise from the stones underfoot, warm and deep, while oud adds a dark wood presence that feels carved rather than poured. Castoreum moves beneath it all, a rough animal note that keeps the courtyard grounded and real.
The smoke drifts lower now, mixing with the amber and the resin until the whole space smells of glowing wood, spice, and warm skin seated on a stone bench beneath the dying brazier.
