Our take

Mod Noir opens with a sharp, green snap, yuzu and clementine cutting through like citrus juice on a papercut. It’s not shy about its synthetic brightness, but that’s the point. The heart is a dense knot of white florals, gardenia and tuberose pushing forward with a wet, almost aquatic sheen, water lily and magnolia softening the edges into something more breathable. Then the dry down goes creamy and vaguely lactonic, nectarine and orange blossom sweetening the musk into a gentle, fuzzy finish. The whole thing feels like a gardenia pressed between the pages of a glossy magazine, left out in the spring sun until the ink and petals start to blur.

It’s a crisp, fresh white floral dressed up as a citrus. The accords betray a split personality, green and aquatic fighting with animalic and sweet, and for a few minutes it’s genuinely interesting. But then it evaporates. Longevity barely cracks three hours, sillage a whisper from the start. Jean Claude Delville gave it a sharpness that cuts through spring air beautifully, but you’ll need to reapply if you want anyone to notice past arm’s length.

This is a breeze-through-the-farmers-market scent, best on a cool April morning when you want to smell like you just brushed past a flowering hedge. It suits someone who values freshness over performance, who doesn’t mind a fragrance that apologizes for itself. Skip it if you crave a tuberose that roars or a musk that lingers into evening. Mod Noir is a polite, pretty ghost, lovely for the forty minutes it decides to stay.
